Breaking News

When it came to showcasing the potential of interactive virtual reality (VR) entertainment, Owlchemy Labs’ Job Simulator had it – almost literally – hands down for the arrival of HTC Vive. With its mix of quirky humour and myriad of little tasks to perform, it was the videogame to demo to VR newbies. And testament continues to be paid with the title almost having a permanent spot in PlayStation VR’s top ten downloads each month. Now the studio is back with sequel Vacation Simulator and it has some big shoes to fill.

When you work hard you then need to play hard, and after a difficult day/week/month, you’ve earned yourself a well-earned break, so it’s time for a vacation (or holiday as we say in the UK). Vacation Simulator continues the series narrative that in 2060 robots now do everything, so modern humans get to learn about what their ancestors did with their time, first ‘jobbing’ and then relaxing.

Fans of the first game will feel instantly at home in Vacation Simulator, keeping with the bright, vibrant design aesthetic, floating robot TV’s, and lots of things to pick up and play with. And that’s no understatement, almost everything you can get your hands on can be used in some way. From little things like bottles all having caps on to cooking stations with all sorts of culinary delights, Vacation Simulator is like being inside one giant toyshop.

As such, Owlchemy Labs has also ensured maximum comfort levels by having pre-designated teleportation points to move between. You’ll need to move around the roomscale area to interact with some items, but for the most part, everything tends to be reasonably close.

Vacation Simulator has a core hub location where you can alter your avatars look as much as you want, before heading out into the three worlds where further accessories can be found. The hub also includes some neat little features including your own room with storage facilities (and safe) for any useful items found. Plus there’s even a games console with some odd titles to kill a few minutes – you can find more dotted around the levels.

Heading out there are three worlds to explore, the Beach – which has been widely seen in trailers and screenshots – the Forest, and the Mountain. Each has its own selection of mini-games, with the core challenge being to collect as many memories as possible to unlock deeper parts of the videogame.

And it’s these tasks that are both the strength and Achilles heel of Vacation Simulator. There’s no denying that there are plenty of things to do in the videogame, and they are fun, however, there’s plenty of repetition, having to collect bugs, taking photos of particular creatures, and keeping everyone fed. Quite a few tend to be very easy (maybe a little too easy), while segments like the sandcastle or ice sculpture building offer some of the best moments in the entire experience – the skiing section is also worth mentioning.

What’s particularly pleasing is the fact that everything just seems to work. Owlchemy Labs needs to be commended on its production values for Vacation Simulator, offering a smooth, faultless experience from start to finish.

To be honest Vacation Simulator was always going to face an uphill struggle against its sibling. Is it better than Job Simulator, most definitely yes, enhancing that hands-on play style fans love. But it also arrives at a time very different to 2016, when expectations have changed, but it hasn’t. Once again the series proves ideal for newcomers. Experienced players will get through Vacation Simulator fairly quickly with the only reason to go back being to 100% the memories. Where Vacation Simulator will really find its market is on standalone devices like Oculus Quest creating new VR fans.

If you have a PlayStation VR and want to soar through the heavens then Ubisoft’s 2016 name Eagle Flight is your very best bet.  However, if you love everything feathered but prefer keeping your feet firmly on the ground then check out Outerloop Games’ Falcon Age which arrived today.
You play Ara, who has been thrown in prison for a minor infraction. Sat in her mobile seeing the hours fly , she befriends a young falcon. Managing to escape, Ara and the falcon must then work together to assist the resistance reclaim their liberty, whilst at precisely the same time regaining her cultural legacy.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Outerloop Games and Falcon Age, reporting again with any additional updates.

While Falcon Age is working on PlayStation 4 via a normal TV, the encounter was especially made for PlayStation VR cans. The narrative, A single-player adventure is a story set on a colony world. Robot offenses have completely decimated of the resources that were once abundant, in turn.

Laced with light humour, so you’ll should name, feed, pet, teach, and dress up your falcon with hats, and scarves to bond with it, prior to roaming the property. These can be employed to feed, heal and fortify your falcon. On a gameplay note, the falcon can be equipped with useful items like armour and sonar.
As the launching trailer showcases, you along with your falcon are more expressive. From playing its claws which makes hand gestures into carrying bombs into feeble places and picking up robots so you can smash their tails inside, Falcon Age is very much the friend movie of this VR world.

OCO invites you to control a pixel block, tapping the screen to make it bop to a pulsing beat, all the while collecting squares, powering over speed pads, and avoiding chasms and destructive surfaces.

It’s slick and minimal, and we it works really well. But we think it’s lacking a certain something… … [MORE]

Heart of the Crucible

Announcing Nine New Playmats for KeyForge

“You look like an Archon with discriminating tastes.”
   –Ronnie Wristclocks

Pre-order your own KeyForge Playmats at your local retailer or online through our website with free shipping in the continental US today!

In KeyForge, two players become mighty Archons, engaging in fast-paced tactical struggles on the Crucible. In your race to gather Æmber, you will lead a team filled with the creatures, artifacts, and technology. You will forge keys to unlock a Vault and come one step closer to ascending beyond this plane of existence. No matter which Houses you favor, you can now display your pride in cinematic fashion as you journey deeper into the Crucible with the upcoming release of Age of Ascension.

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce nine new KeyForge playmats from Fantasy Flight Supply, each featuring art drawn from the Age of Ascension set—now available for pre-order at your local retailer or online through our website, with free shipping within the continental United States!

A World Renewed

With these nine playmats, you can continue to explore the colorful world of the Crucible, fully embracing your role as an Archon and displaying your pride for your favorite Houses. Each playmat features vibrant original art from Age of Ascension, and by collecting all nine, you can be ready for any challenge, no matter which of your Archon Decks you choose to take into battle. Complete with a high-quality, slip-resistant rubber base, each of these 24” x 14” mats display your cards in stunning fashion while keeping them protected from stains and spills, whether you’re playing in a tournament or just around the kitchen table.

The intense power of House Brobnar takes center stage with the Drummernaut Playmat. This vibrant mat features the percussionist of the Skalds, a Brobnar rock band. The giants and goblins of this House love anything loud and destructive, and the explosive tunes of the Skalds are a favorite of many. There is nothing and nobody that can beat their beat.

Moving to the shadowed tunnels and dungeons of Dis that divide the current layer of the Crucible from the last, the Machinations of Dis Playmat highlights the Orb of Invidius, an artifact of House Dis. The nature of this mysterious item, or its original purpose may not be clear, but whatever it was, it’s cursed now. And curiosity about the plots of demons is a dangerous business.

Switching from the realm of monsters to the realm of logic, the In the Lab Playmat takes a peek at the work of Pip Pip, a Logos scientist. This House is divided into Theorists who focus on reason and possibility, and Mechanics who run tests and study their gathered data. Currently, Pip Pip is working at a breakneck pace as he explores the idea of a “lead foot,” which is sure to cause shockwaves across the Crucible.

The Storm Crawler Playmat highlights the pinnacle of Martian innovation. While they once powered their technology with world-poisoning cavorite, since coming to the Crucible, House Mars has learned how to harness Æmber in their machines, making them better, faster, and deadlier than ever before. With advanced ray guns, flying saucers, and walkers like the Storm Crawler, they will ensure that Mars Lives On.

Take a closer look at the dark side of House Sanctum with the Grim Resolve Playmat. Aubade the Grim is a steadfast knight of the House, driven by what he believes to be divine right. When it comes to clashes between Archons, he not only captures Æmber from his opponent, he destroys it to ensure that they will not move closer towards their goal. While others may worry about becoming blinded by ambition, Aubade is certain that the ends justify the means.

Looking to House Shadows, the Finders Keepers Playmat offers a rare glimpse at the elusive thief Lamindra. As one of the Svarr elves who make up much of this House’s population, Lamindra makes her living on the Crucible by staying quick on her feet and never passing up an opportunity for profit. While others may look down on this lifestyle, the members of House Shadows know that stealing is only a crime if you get caught.

The Hypnopotamus Playmat draws from House Untamed for its art. This wild, loosely-organized House is based on freedom, so each of its members can live true to their nature. But while the wilds are inclusive, they are not safe. In fact, the hypnopotamus is the deadliest animal on three known planets! But if you can add one to your Archon’s team, you are sure to find a powerful ally in the trials before you.

In addition to these classic, art-focused mats, Fantasy Flight Supply is also proud to announce two 24” x 14” playmats that feature game layouts to accommodate either right or left-handed players! Each of these mats keeps your battles organized and immersive with marked sections for your keys, your Archon, draw deck, discard pile, and archive, while still highlighting new characters from the Age of Ascension set. With these new implements in your arsenal, you are ready to face any challenge the beautifully chaotic world of the Crucible may present.

Call of the Crucible

Whichever Houses you choose to align with, these KeyForge playmats help you to show your pride and keep your unique decks protected, ensuring that the focus stays on your tactical cosmic clashes. Embrace the nature of your House, unlock the power of your teams, and explore the ever-changing world of infinite possibilities!

Pre-order your new KeyForge playmats at your local retailer or online with free shipping in the continental US today! Otherwise, be sure to look for these mats when they hit shelves in the second quarter of 2019!

Announcing the Dewback Rider Unit Expansion for Star Wars: Legion

“Look sir, droids!”
–Davin Felth, Star Wars: A New Hope

The Galactic Empire rules over countless worlds, each boasting its own unique flora, fauna, and terrain. Rather than adapt their military vehicles to the conditions of every individual world, Imperial commanders commonly prefer to use local creatures to support their operations. Now, one of the most iconic creatures from the Star Wars saga is on its way to bolster your Imperial forces.

Pre-order your own copy of the Dewback Rider Unit Expansion at your local retailer or online through our website with free shipping in the continental US today!

Fantasy Flight Games is excited to announce the Dewback Rider Unit Expansion for Star Wars™: Legion!

Able to survive extreme temperatures, these mighty reptilian creatures are the perfect complement to Imperial troopers during their patrols. Within this expansion, you’ll find an unpainted, beautifully detailed Dewback miniature featuring a Sandtrooper rider with four distinct customization options: your Dewback Rider can be built carrying the standard shock prod, or you can equip them with three different weapons.

On top of the ability to customize the look of your Dewback Rider, this Unit Expansion gives you plenty of ways to tweak how this unit operates in the thick of battle. Six upgrade cards accompany the miniature, letting you modify its armament, training, or the comms systems it carries into battle. Finally, a unit card  and a handful of tokens round out this expansion, giving you everything you need to deploy it as a support unit for your Imperial armies. Read on for more information on the Dewback Rider Unit Expansion!

Living Tanks

From towering AT-STs to legions of Stormtroopers, the Empire can display its dominance in any number of ways, and the hulking Dewback is yet another method of reminding local populations who is truly in control. Like their fellow Imperial military units, though, Dewback Riders are far from symbolic enforcers of Imperial rule. Between the Sandtrooper rider’s array of weaponry and the powerful claws of their mount, this duo is a force to be reckoned with.

As natives of the scorching hot desert planet Tatooine, Dewbacks have developed survival mechanisms that also make them useful weapons of war. Their thick hides, for instance, may protect Dewbacks from the brutal rays of Tatooine’s twin suns, but they also provide a useful layer of armor from incoming blaster fire, especially for a target as large as a Dewback. In addition to this scaly skin, a Dewback’s claws make them particularly surefooted beasts, ideal for conveying their riders across uncertain terrain on the battlefields of the Galactic Civil War.

But these claws can be used beyond simply providing a sturdy foundation for a single trooper in battle. To the Empire, they are deadly weapons that can be used to thrash any unsuspecting enemies foolish enough to believe that Dewbacks are a docile species. Before a Dewback can unleash an attack with its claws, however, it must first close the distance. While Dewbacks commonly move at a plodding pace, they can be spurred forward to engage with enemy forces even faster.

As intimidating as they are, Dewbacks are only one half of the unit. Trained to work in tandem with the Sandtrooper riding atop them, Dewback and trooper can combine in a number of useful ways. If nothing else, the Sandtrooper carries a shock prod that makes the entire unit’s melee attack a bit stronger. But being astride a massive Dewback also provides a useful vantage point from which a trooper can make powerful ranged attacks—and they have three weapons that give them an option for every situation. Equipping your Sandtrooper with a T-21 blaster rifle or an RT-97C blaster rifle adds a new dimension to the unit, making them deadly from a distance. Alternatively, a CR-24 Flame Rifle enhances the Dewback Rider at close range, helping them uproot any subversive elements tucked behind cover.

No matter what weapons you choose, the Dewback Rider is sure to have an imposing presence on the battlefield. We’ll have much more information on the Dewback Rider and the upgrade cards included in this Unit Expansion in a future preview!

Tame the Beast

With their thick skins and razor-sharp claws, Dewbacks can survive in almost any environment. When they are properly trained, these traits can be harnessed to make them just as effective as any high-tech military vehicle.

Look for the Dewback Rider Unit Expansion (SWL42) and the Imperial Shoretroopers Unit Expansion (SWL41) at your local retailer in the second quarter of 2019. Pre-order your copies at your local retailer or online through our website—with free shipping in the continental US—here!

Having a single supplier is bad, and so is having a single distributor. But worse than either of these nightmare scenarios is the one where you’re at the mercy of a company that is neither a supplier nor a distributor.

Sales and discounts are changing in 2019! Here’s Bubobubo with more:

“TL;DR: We’re updating how our sales work for the first few months of the new year.

In 2019, we’re revamping our sales. First up, we’ll be focusing on more favorites like Your Shop, event passes, and the Essence Emporium. Next, we’ll be experimenting with weekly sales over the next few months.

Overall, the total amount of content going on sale will go up. You’ll see the balance shift towards newer and higher quality skins, but we’ll still look to keep a healthy presence of champions and classics in the mix. There will also be some weeks that look pretty different from what you’ve seen before.

Some features of the new weekly sales we’re testing:

  • Every Monday at noon PT, there will be at least 20 items on sale in the store
  • We’ll feature sales in the store front page below “Popular items” instead of in sale schedule announcements (see our refund policy here)
  • Everything eligible for weekly sales, early sales, or essence emporiums could be included in a sale
  • We’ll have at least two dedicated essence emporiums a year
  • Monthly bundles will be cut from the rotation

We haven’t changed these sales in a long time, so we’ll keep a close eye on feedback as we go!”

Quelling Rebellion

Announcing the Imperial Shoretroopers Unit Expansion for Star Wars: Legion

“Failure will find you explaining why to a far less patient audience.”
–Grand Moff Tarkin, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The Empire has many secrets to protect. While an assignment to the tropical planet of Scarif may seem pleasant to soldiers stationed in harsher climes, protecting these countless secrets is a task that requires constant vigilance. Now, new Imperial troops are on their way to ensure no Rebel breaches Imperial security.

Pre-order your own copy of the Imperial Shoretroopers Unit Expansion at your local retailer or online through our website with free shipping in the contental US today!

Fantasy Flight Games is excited to announce the Imperial Shoretroopers Unit Expansions for Star Wars™: Legion!

Specially trained to comb beaches and bunkers for any sign of Rebel infiltration, Shoretroopers are often assigned to important bases where secrecy is of the utmost importance. Within this expansion, you’ll find seven unique, unpainted Imperial Shoretrooper miniatures to add to your Star Wars: Legion collection. Five of these troopers are armed with E-22 blaster rifles, while a Shoretrooper equipped with a T-21B targeting rifle is ready to deal extra damage from long range.

But if you’re truly looking to keep enemy units from escaping with the sensitive information, a DF-90 Mortar Trooper can be added to your army as a detachment from the rest of your Shoretroopers. Rounding out this expansion are two unit cards, five upgrade cards to fully kit out your Shoretroopers, and all the tokens you need to deploy them to any battle. Read on for more information on the Imperial Shoretroopers Unit Expansion!

Coastal Defense

Countless soldiers have enforced the Emperor’s will across the galaxy as Stormtroopers. Only an exceptional few, however, are selected for rotational duty as Imperial Shoretroopers. Trained not only in tropical environment operations, but also in entrenched warfare, these troops are often assigned to important bases such as the Imperial security facility on Scarif. No matter where they’re deployed, their expertise and equipment help them counter any Rebel incursion.

On the battlefields of Star Wars: Legion, Shoretroopers become the most elite option for filling out the corps units that make up the rank-and-file of your Imperial armies. In addition to their advanced training, Shoretroopers are the first Imperial unit to carry the upgraded E-22 blaster rifle, making them more dangerous than Stormtroopers or Snowtroopers based on their armament alone.

Beyond this, you’ll find Shoretroopers eager to carry out your orders, and they give you plenty of reasons to make them a major part of your strategy. Issuing orders to your Shoretroopers immediately puts them on the offensive and—once they’ve identified a new target—helps them fire with deadly accuracy. Spotting new targets is easier if you have a weapon with a bit more range, of course, which is exactly why select Shoretroopers choose to carry the T-21B targeting rifle. Not only does this powerful blaster rifle make the Shoretroopers a threat from long distance, it also allows you to hit the enemy where it hurts the most.

Whether they’re firing from a distance or have their blasters trained on close range targets, Shoretroopers are prepared to counter sudden Rebel ambushes. While the fire from their E-22 blaster rifles alone is sufficient to keep opposing forces hunkered down, Shoretroopers are also trained to work closely with emplacement troops to make sure no stray Rebels escape. The heavy fire from an E-Web Heavy Blaster Team can help the Shoretroopers cut down fleeing enemies, but that isn’t their only option.

In fact, small detachments of Shoretroopers often take it on themselves to man DF-90 mortar launchers that can provide even more suppressive fire. While these mortar troopers operate as independent units and are free to lend fire support to any unit, they can only be deployed if a corresponding Imperial Shoretroopers unit is included in your army.

We’ll have much more information about the Imperial Shoretroopers and the heavy weapons they use in a future preview!

Secure Your Secrets

The Rebel Alliance will stop at nothing to uncover as many Imperial secrets as they can. With units of Imperial Shoretroopers at your command, however, you can be sure no Rebels escape your clutches.

Look for the Imperial Shoretroopers Unit Expansion (SWL41) and the Dewback Rider Unit Expansion (SWL42) at your local retailer in the second quarter of 2019. Pre-order your copies at your local retailer or online through our website—with free shipping in the continental US—here!

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action came out three years ago and I still can’t believe it. All the opportunities that have come our way, all the help we’ve been able to give to those we love thanks to it, all the support we get every day from everyone. It all still feels unreal, and now the game is going to be on PS4 this May!

In case you’ve never heard about VA-11 Hall-A: this isn’t a game about glamorous heroes toppling governments in a cyberpunk future. You assume the role of an ordinary bartender named Jill Stingray, who listens to the tales of strangers and regulars at the VA-11 Hall-A bar while she mixes drinks for them. Characters react differently depending on what drinks they were served and how much alcohol they’ve had — and you’ll learn about the dystopian place they all live in, Glitch City.

VA-11 Hall-A

I wanna go into some spicy lore about Jill’s boss at VA-11 Hall-A, Dana Zane. Now, Dana is a character that predates Sukeban Games itself. Her origins can be traced back to being the mascot from an old blog my co-founder Christopher had. Dana’s role remained even after said blog got reiterated and even after we started making games. We saw fit to make her, if not the protagonist, at the very least a notable face in the production of VA-11 Hall-A.

Being a “mascot” of sorts, Dana has always reflected Sukeban Games as a brand, even before we were called Sukeban Games. One of the driving forces behind what we do is a constant feeling that we don’t belong in regular circles. Be it gaming, anime, or whatever, we’ve always felt like outsiders whenever we try to fit into the regular hobby circles. So we’ve tended to carve out our own space where we can be ourselves with no problems.

As such, Dana has always had a rebellious streak to her, geared towards the core principle that if the world wasn’t gonna accept her, she would happily carve out her own space in the world, welcoming anyone that feels like they don’t belong out there.

Dana’s role as the representation of what Sukeban Games signifies is even reflected on the company name. When the time came to pick a company name, we knew we wanted something that would reflect Dana as a character, that would encapsulate her rebelliousness and deeply punk attitude. And so “Sukeban Games” was born.

VA-11 Hall-A

We wanna highlight that Dana in VA-11 Hall-A is a more mature version of herself. We have a huge desire to explore Dana at the height of her reckless and punk nature. VA-11 Hall-A’s Dana is a glimpse into a future where she’s been to hell and back, only to return stronger and more inclusive than ever.

Sukeban Games as a team has been through a kind of hell too, if you know what’s up with our home country of Venezuela. Still, if you told me five years ago that the game we made for a game jam would be on consoles everywhere, I would’ve probably been annoyed at you pulling my leg. But VA-11 Hall-A is now a reality, our reality, and we will forever be thankful to everyone that has supported us all the way through the tough times and more.

Don’t forget, if there wasn’t anything that took your fancy this week there’s always last week’s listings on The VR Job Hub to check as well.

If you are an employer looking for someone to fill an immersive technology related role – regardless of the industry – don’t forget you can send us the lowdown on the position and we’ll be sure to feature it in that following week’s feature. Details should be sent to Peter Graham (pgraham@vrfocus.com).

We’ll see you next week on VRFocus at the usual time of 3PM (UK) for another selection of jobs from around the world.

The world is in crisis. An all too common catalyst for video games, yet one that provides the backdrop for some seriously fun escapades. Mechstermination Force from Hörberg Productions is the latest to use this motivation, following a four-year gap from the studio. After such a long wait, is the robot basher all systems go or a malfunctioning mess?

On January 17th, 2024, leading nations of the world fell to the building size machines named MegaMechs. With humanity in ruins, it’s left up to a small squad of resistance fighters to take down these mechs one by one. From the off there’s a lot to love about Mechstermination Force. The colours for one pop from the screen, whether in handheld or docked, while the easy-to-pickup controls mean within minutes you’ll be mid-battle. … [MORE]

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East and Gary Grigsby’s War in the West are now available DRM-free. Get both games with the expansions 50% off until April 12, 1PM UTC.

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East is the spiritual heir to the great Eastern Front board and computer wargames of the past; a turn-based World War II strategy game down to the division and brigade level, stretching across the entire Eastern Front at a 10 mile per hex scale.

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

You may not have heard of Three Fields Entertainment, but you may be familiar with our past work. We started the Burnout series back in 2000 and were Creative Director (Alex) and Executive Producer (Fiona) on every game in the series. In 2013, we left Electronic Arts and in 2014 started Three Fields Entertainment, which with just seven people is a return to our early days — a small passionate team working together more like a music band than a typical development team.

We have made four games to date, and Dangerous Driving is the most exciting yet, as it is a return to a genre that we love and have always been passionate about. All genres have their core ingredients that become genre standards and the games we have made have had a bit of influence in forming the core ingredients of the aggressive racing genre.

It has been over 10 years since we last made this genre of game, so appropriately enough here are 10 ways we’ve taken the game further by revisiting it with fresh eyes and new technology:

1. The widest range of game modes seen in any game in this genre

The game has nine different single player game modes all tied together in a 69-event single player progression. We looked at what all our favorite game modes have been over the years and included them all: races where Takedowns are what fuel your speed; eliminator races where you literally fight to survive over five laps, with the last place being eliminated each lap; 1-on-1 races where the other guy is in a faster car and the only way to win is to try and take him down repeatedly; 3-race GPs; Pursuit where you play as the cops; Survival where it’s survive against the clock and the traffic (one crash and it’s game over) and genre-favorite Road Rage is back, but with some new rule sets… (see #4 below)

2. Persistent wrecks

One of the best things about coming back to this genre with the benefit of PS4 hardware is the ability to do things we could never do before — and one of those is what we call persistent wrecks. Every time you take someone down their crashed wreck remains on the road, making each subsequent lap even more dangerous. And we’re excited about what this is going to mean online. (see #10 below!)

3. New types of Takedowns

We couldn’t put persistent wrecks in the game without using them as a crash-and-Takedown variant. Take someone down into a persistent wreck and it’s a Junkyard Takedown, crash into one yourself and it’s a Nervous Wreck. And believe us: you will be one when you’re on the last lap, desperately hanging on to first place hoping a wreck isn’t going to take you out.

4. Familiar modes; new rule sets

Road Rage is back but we wanted to introduce new ways to play, so in later events we have upped the challenge level. How many Takedowns can you score when Shunts are disabled — or when only Traffic Takedowns count? This can get really challenging and we can’t wait to see the leaderboards for Traffic Takedowns. Our office best is only about 10!

5. Pursuit mode with up to five Target vehicles

We’ve always been fans of playing as the cops. It’s a recurring theme in much of our work and one of the reasons that we chose to make our version of Need for Speed a remake of the classic Hot Pursuit.

At the start of the game it’s you against one Target vehicle but as the game progresses and you unlock better cop cars you’ll take on faster and more numerous opponents. This is a really intense mode played on our Point-to-Point tracks and you need to stop all the targets before you reach the end.

6. Cars that are tailor-made for modes

In this genre vehicles can end up being the same, just a model swap with very similar stats. In Dangerous Driving we wanted to make car choice more meaningful.

So for example the Tuned version of each car earns and uses boost much quicker than any other, making it perfect for Heatwave events (see #8 below). Advanced vehicles are stronger, hit harder and take less damage. Prototype vehicles are the ‘best’ in that they are the fastest, but they’re made of carbon fiber so they’re the most fragile. We didn’t want there to be just one ‘best’ car when we take the game online (see #10!). You make a choice based on the mode and your playing style.

7. AI based on real player performances

Another staple for the genre is AI that is designed to stay around the player and give them a good race. In Dangerous Driving we used real player performance to ‘teach’ the AI to drive and in most of the game modes the AI is racing to a time set by a real human player. Take Face Offs for example — these guys are gunning for it just like the human player that was used to create their data making for an incredibly intense experience. The only way to throw them off is to take them down — repeatedly.

8. Modes where we genuinely don’t know the limit

Following the theme of cars tailor-made for modes — take a Tuned vehicle into a Heatwave mode and you get a very special and unique advantage. Heatwave events are purer race events (more similar to races in, say, Burnout 2) and dropping a whole boost bar in one go refills the boost, meaning you can chain your boost repeatedly. Tuned vehicles are perfect because they earn and use boost more quickly so you can chain them quicker — but also each successful chain in a Tuned car adds 2 mph to your top speed… until you crash. Interestingly, we have no idea what the limit is on this as we have always crashed after about 30-35 chains!! So we’re looking forward to seeing the YouTube videos of how far players push it!

9. Spotify integration

We’ve long believed that the music people drive to is intensely personal so we really wanted to integrate Spotify and give people endless choice. Authorize your premium Spotify account in the Audio menu and you will then be able to control your music inside the game. Follow the development team’s own Spotify account or choose your own personal playlist (we are fans of Spotify’s Mixed for you ‘Songs to Sing in the Car’).

10. Online play

In the first month after release, we will release DLC that adds online capabilities to the game and we’re really excited about how all the new features will transfer into online. There will be online racing and of course online Road Rage — and persistent wrecks, Junkyard Takedowns and Nervous Wrecks (see above) will all feature strongly!

Dangerous Driving releases on PS4 on April 9. You can pre-order it now until April 8 and receive an exclusive car (only available to digital pre-order customers).

Since launching on iOS and Android in December of last year, Inner Hero’s Fleets of Heroes has made a stark point of refreshing the base-building genre by having players dominate the sky instead of sea. Set in a far-flung future where multiple factions are at war, only building up and managing an expert fleet of intergalactic freighters can one gain valuable resources in a bid to defend civilisation.

You’ll start Fleets of Heroes from a small base of operations, using strategic tactics and resource development to expand your fleet across the stars. There are multiple ways it aims to engross players both familiar and new to the genre, so we sat down with developers Inner Hero to learn more about the experience. From the original thinking behind the game to hints at future updates, here’s what they had to say. … [MORE]
